Mitchell’s pulse pounded as his gaze met Hazel’s widened eyes.

“Jackson, are you okay?” She yelled into the radio.

“Yes—with Teddy and Elijah—took Stan’s radio.” His broken words told Mitchell they were in a remote area.

Hazel smiled at her son’s message. “That’s okay. Tell me where you are.”

“Hiding—cave—”

“Jackson! What cave?” Hazel’s tone raised a pitch as alarm flashed on her pretty face.

Silence answered.

“Jackson?”

Nothing.

“Bear Cub, come again!” Frank’s voice cracked, exposing the emotion he’d demanded Hazel contain earlier.

The radio waves remained silent.

Hazel’s forehead crinkled as defeat was once again displayed on her forlorn expression.

Mitchell rubbed her back. “He’s safe, Hazel. Firebug doesn’t have them.”

Her eyes narrowed. “What makes you say that?”

“Because he said they were hiding. That’s a good sign, right?” He reached to move a stray strand out of her eyes, then dropped his hand.

Not here, Mitch. You’re not alone.

“He’s right, Hazel. And he has a radio. He could call again.” Bree walked between them, nudging him away from her best friend. His sister turned her gaze to him.

Her glaring eyes told him one thing.

Stay away from my friend.

“But why didn’t he call earlier?” Hazel asked.

“Maybe they were out of range or something.” Frank pulled out his map and gestured his daughter to a nearby picnic table. “Let’s rethink our search and look at all known caves.” He sat and spread out the map.

Hazel hesitated.

Frank glanced over his shoulder. “Come on, Hazel. Now! We have lots of ground to cover.”

She lurched into motion and sat across from her father.

“Mitch, I need to talk to you.” Bree’s whispered words spoke volumes. She walked to the edge of the clearing, beckoning him to follow.

She was upset with him for some strange reason.

Great. This was all he needed right now. An angry sister.

He followed. “What’s wrong, Bree?”

She placed her fisted hands on her hips. “Stop crushing on Hazel.”

Where did that come from? “What? I’m not.” Liar. You are. He suppressed his thoughts, as he wouldn’t admit that to his sister.

Bree poked his chest. “You are. I see the way you look at her. Stay away.”

“We’re just friends.” Heat surged and sat on the edge of his emotions. “Don’t tell me what to do. You’ve done that too much lately.”

“Oh, we’re on this topic again. I did not demand you speak at Mom’s funeral.”

Mitchell threw his hands in the air. “Sis, I don’t want to fight. It’s neither the time nor the place.”

She tilted her head. “You brought it up and we have to talk about it someday. Mitch, I want you back in my life. I’ve missed you. This past year has been hard. Losing Mom, and then you too.”

“Bree, the crack in our relationship started with Ivy, not when Mom died.” Why couldn’t Mitchell let it go? He longed for a stronger bond between them.

His sister let out an extended, audible sigh. “How many times do I have to say I’m sorry? She was trouble, and I wanted to warn you. Girls know these things, bro.”

Mitchell massaged the knot in his shoulder.
